Inside Ace Combat 8: FCU recruit’s three-day test

An FCU recruit tested Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve over three days. The UE5 sim uses Cloudly volumetric clouds and DualSense haptics; missions ranged from carrier defense to land-battleship attacks. Release Oct. 2, 2026.

An FCU recruit using the codename “Islander” spent three days at a restricted training facility testing Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, a flight simulator built in Unreal Engine 5. Sessions took place ahead of the game’s Oct. 2, 2026 release. Recruits signed non-disclosure agreements and trained in a hangar outfitted with PC rigs and DualSense controllers.

The software is presented as the FCU’s eighth iteration of training tools. Early modules covered basic flight controls and carrier operations aboard the carrier Endurance, then moved into combat scenarios with radio chatter from recurring characters such as Tasha and a wingmate called Professor.

The simulation uses a proprietary system called Cloudly to render three-dimensional volumetric clouds that react when struck by explosions and projectiles. Visuals and audio were reported as high quality. The DualSense controller provided tactile feedback for impacts and weapon use. Cutscenes appear from a first-person perspective with limited interactivity; pilots can look around and perform occasional actions during these sequences.

Training progressed from takeoff, navigation and carrier landings to defending the Endurance at North Point and conducting preemptive strikes on hostile fleets. The recruit tested fighters, attackers, multirole jets and electronic warfare aircraft, and served as squadron leader with the ability to order wingmen to focus targets, disperse or provide cover.

One mission required disabling the treads of a land battleship equipped with railguns while evading heavy ground fire and enemy fighters in an urban area. Another mission involved attacking multiple Podarge airborne transports; the simulation models debris so that wreckage falling from one destroyed ship can damage others below.

Electronic aircraft carried support weapons designed to disrupt enemy systems. Players can configure squadron loadouts manually or use an auto-assign option. The recruit reported one mission was classified and declined to describe it.

After three days of hands-on sessions, participants were instructed to await further notices. The recruit wrote: “If the FCU wanted to, I imagine it would be quite popular if released commercially.” Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is scheduled for release on Oct. 2, 2026.
