Analyst: Skip a State of Play re-reveal for Fairgames

An industry analyst warned Sony against re-revealing Fairgames at next month’s State of Play, saying PlayStation enthusiasts will react negatively to a live-service heist.

An industry analyst warned Sony against reintroducing Fairgames at next month’s State of Play, arguing the livestream’s audience reacts poorly to live-service projects and recommending a separate reveal.

The analyst pointed to a recently filed trademark, Break In, which may be a rebrand of Fairgames. They noted a public re-reveal at State of Play would likely inflame fans who follow the platform’s livestreams closely.

The analyst described State of Play viewers as the platform’s most enthusiastic and said they are often hostile to live-service announcements. They argued a polished presentation would not prevent negative reactions once viewers recognise the game as a live-service heist.

To illustrate the risk, the analyst recalled two recent examples where timing and venue amplified backlash. A weekday blog reveal of Horizon Hunters Gathering drew widespread criticism, and the analyst wrote it would likely have provoked a stronger response if shown during a livestream. Highguard faced strong negative reaction after being revealed as the final announcement at a major awards show; the analyst said that prime placement intensified criticism.

The analyst recommended presenting Fairgames outside State of Play in a setting where the title can be contextualized and shown with gameplay and community plans. They suggested a separate event or targeted marketing campaign could reduce immediate hostility from the platform’s most vocal fans and allow the studio to explain live-service and multiplayer features.

Fairgames is described as a live-service heist project linked to developer Haven. The Break In trademark was filed recently, and the analyst suggested the filing may indicate a rebrand is underway.

“State of Play is a death sentence for these types of games now,” the analyst wrote. They also noted that initial online backlash does not always stop players from trying a game, but opening a title to immediate online outrage can affect long-term perception.
