Ao Oni remaster arrives on PS5 July 3 for $9.99
Ao Oni, a 2008 freeware horror cult classic, will be remastered for PlayStation 5 and released July 3 as a $9.99 download.
Game Studio will publish a remaster of Ao Oni for PlayStation 5 on Friday, July 3, priced at $9.99. The release follows earlier 2024 ports for PC and Nintendo Switch.
The game retains its core premise: four visitors enter a mansion where a blue monster stalks the halls and they must try to escape. The remaster will be sold as a digital download on the PlayStation Store; a store page had not been published at the time of the announcement. The remaster’s plot description reads: “Long ago, there was a mansion on the outskirts of town. There were whispers among the people about such rumors as Blue monsters coming out… Can they escape alive?”
The PS5 version includes two new gameplay modes. High Speed Mode lets players select chase speeds from double speed up to 15 times faster. Ao Oni Ai’s Story follows a character named Ai who awakens in a mansion whose rooms change layout with each playthrough; players must explore, collect items and find a way out.
Ao Oni originated in 2008 as a Japanese freeware horror game created with RPG Maker XP and developed a dedicated following. The title led to several adaptations, including a 2014 live-action film and multiple fan works. The remaster brings the game’s hide-and-seek mechanics and simple presentation to Sony’s console as a paid release.
