Longtime Bethesda Fan Rates Starfield 6/10 After 85 Hours
A longtime Bethesda fan, after 85 hours on PS5, rated Starfield 6/10, citing frequent crashes, poor frame rates and repetitive procedural planets while praising faction quest lines.
A longtime Bethesda fan spent 85 hours playing Starfield on a PlayStation 5 and rated the game 6 out of 10. The player reported frequent crashes, low frame rates and repetitive procedurally generated planets, and praised the game’s faction quest lines while criticizing the main Constellation storyline.
The player began on the PS5 port after Starfield’s earlier release on other platforms and reported crashes within five hours. Bethesda issued patches for the PS5 version, after which the player wrote the game became mostly playable but continued to experience occasional crashes and persistent frame-rate problems. The review calls overall technical performance ‘borderline unforgivable’ for 2026.
The review highlights the faction quest lines as a strength, noting they offer meaningful choices and consequences and contribute to the game’s worldbuilding. The player reported caring about some faction outcomes and said the factions made the Settled Systems feel more distinct.
The main Constellation campaign was described as dull and vague. The player reported the campaign centers on tracking space artifacts across procedurally generated locations and lacks the personality and intrigue found in the faction stories.
Procedural generation drew sustained criticism. The player reported many planets used the same assets and layouts, citing repeated visits to identical abandoned cryogenic facilities with the same enemy placements. Loading screens between ship and surface were reported to interrupt immersion and make exploration feel disjointed.
The review acknowledged design elements that create a sense of place, including nonplayer character routines, in-game calendars and random events. Loot and progression systems were described as enjoyable for their grind, but repetition of locations and foes reduced long-term appeal.
The player questioned the game’s scope, saying the studio relied on procedural methods to deliver a large number of explorable planets. The review suggested the experience might have benefited from fewer hand-crafted planets and more focused, nonrandom content.
After patching, the PS5 version was playable for long sessions but continued to show technical limitations. Frame-rate issues and occasional crashes persisted, and the player compared Starfield’s technical and structural performance unfavorably with more recent titles.
The player concluded with a 6/10 score. The review credited the game with strong faction-driven narratives but cited the main quest, technical instability and repetitive procedural design as reasons the game did not rate higher. The review also questioned whether Starfield’s strengths will affect expectations for future Bethesda releases.
