Bungie to End Active Development on Destiny 2 After June 9

Bungie will end active development on Destiny 2 after a final live-service update on June 9. The game will remain playable; the studio has not announced a sequel amid reports of planned layoffs.

Bungie announced it will end active development on Destiny 2 after a final live-service content update scheduled for June 9, titled Moments of Triumph.

The studio’s blog post said it has “reached the time” to move beyond Destiny 2 and that the title will remain playable but will not receive major new content after the June update. The post added, “Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today.”

According to the announcement, updates after June 9 will prioritize stability and accessibility rather than large-scale expansions. The Moments of Triumph update is expected to include gameplay tweaks and quality-of-life changes intended to keep core activities accessible for returning and existing players. The company did not list every specific feature change in the notice.

The blog post thanked the player community for years of shared play and highlighted in-game destinations players may revisit, including the Cosmodrome, the Pale Heart and the Lawless Frontier. The studio wrote, “We’re proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created. Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories.”

Separate reporting claims the company plans a significant number of layoffs and that there are no immediate plans to begin work on Destiny 3. Bungie did not publish a staffing plan or a timeline for future titles alongside its end-of-development notice.

Bungie described the announcement as “a new beginning for Bungie” but follow-up reporting indicated the Destiny 2 development team does not yet have a new project. The studio directed players to the end-of-life blog for full details about the final update and ongoing support.

Players can expect the June 9 Moments of Triumph release to mark the transition from new-content production to maintenance and accessibility work for the live service game.
