Bungie to end Destiny 2 live-service updates June 9, 2026
Bungie will stop active Destiny 2 development; the final live-service update arrives June 9, 2026 as the studio shifts staff to new projects.
Bungie announced in a studio blog post that it will end active development on Destiny 2 and release the final live-service content update on June 9, 2026. After that date the studio will stop producing new live-service content for the game.
Bungie wrote the decision follows completion of The Final Shape storyline and a shift in studio priorities to incubate new games. “While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2,” the post reads. The studio added that work on new projects will begin after the June update.
The June 9 update is described as large and definitive. Planned changes include the return of the in-game Director, new missions intended to close certain character arcs and storylines, adjustments to weapons and class systems, and revisions to how players purchase cosmetics. Bungie published a full list of technical and gameplay changes on its blog.
The post did not confirm whether Bungie will continue the Destiny franchise under a new title. The studio currently lists Marathon, an extraction shooter released earlier this year, as its other active title while staff shift to new developments.
Destiny launched in 2014 and Destiny 2 arrived in 2017. Since then Bungie has issued annual expansions and ongoing live-service updates, and the series has maintained an active community for nearly a decade.
The June 2026 update will be the last scheduled live-service content release from Bungie for Destiny 2. After that date the studio’s public development focus will be on incubating and building new projects.
