Bungie to stop active Destiny 2 development on June 9

Bungie will end active Destiny 2 development on June 9; the live game will stay online but will not receive new content as the studio shifts resources to new projects.

Bungie announced it will end active development of Destiny 2 on June 9. The live servers will remain online, but the studio will stop releasing new content and end live-service support as it reallocates staff and resources to other projects.

Destiny 2 launched in 2017 and expanded through multiple paid and free updates before adopting a free-to-play model. Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022 and integrated the studio into its PlayStation 5 first-party lineup. Bungie confirmed that June 9 marks the end of active content development rather than the removal of the game; players can continue to access existing content and play on live servers.

The studio said the final update will prioritize long-term accessibility and stability instead of adding new seasonal or live-service content. Bungie has not announced plans for a direct sequel. It noted that the 2024 expansion The Final Shape concluded the main Destiny 2 storyline, and that additional support continued last year with the Renegades content.

Company leaders cited declining player numbers and a shift in development priorities as factors in the decision. Bungie has redirected resources toward its new intellectual property, Marathon, which received positive reviews but has not drawn a large player base. Sony recorded a write-down exceeding $750 million related to the Bungie acquisition after the studio faced challenges in sustaining player engagement.

In a company post, Bungie wrote the final update will aim to keep Destiny 2 “a welcome place for players to return to” while the studio begins “a new beginning” and focuses on “incubating our next games.” Bungie added it will continue to maintain the live game for the foreseeable future.

After nearly a decade of regular expansions and seasonal content, June 9 will mark the end of new live updates for Destiny 2. Players will still be able to play campaigns, raids, and other existing activities on the live servers.
