Bungie Will Let Players Shape Marathon’s Multi-Year Story
Bungie plans to release Marathon story content across multiple years, letting player activity influence future plotlines while keeping the planet Tau Ceti pre-history fixed.
Bungie will roll out story content for Marathon over the coming years and allow player activity to influence ongoing narrative arcs, while the game’s pre-history on the planet Tau Ceti will remain set in place.
Creative director Julia Nardin said, “We know where we want to take the story over the next few years, but I don’t want to say it’s completely ‘locked in’ because it’s important to us that our players be able to help shape it.” She described player influence on the story as part of the game’s live-service design.
Marathon is an extraction shooter for PlayStation 5 that launched earlier this year. Bungie has expanded the title through regular updates and seasonal content and plans to continue adding narrative material across multiple seasons.
Bungie has fixed the events that occurred on Tau Ceti before the game’s start. Players will uncover that backstory gradually by progressing through the game and by collecting specific in-game items. The studio plans to add more background material over time to provide additional context.
Major updates are being designed so new and returning players can follow the plot without having played from day one. “They’ll always be able to uncover the mysteries of Tau Ceti’s past while experiencing its present,” Nardin added. The team intends for each season to act as an entry point for newcomers.
Bungie’s roadmap balances a set pre-game history with adaptive storytelling driven by player choices, in-game events and seasonal releases. The studio is preparing future chapters and additional background material tied to Tau Ceti as part of those plans.
The development approach aligns with a broader practice in live-service games of using seasonal structures to introduce content and lower barriers to entry for latecomers. Bungie has stated it expects to keep expanding Marathon’s narrative over the next few years.
