Bungie to Restore Destiny 2 Vaulted Content, Rework Marathon

Bungie will restore several vaulted Destiny 2 expansions and expand Marathon into a deeper survival experience, apologizing for poor communication and promising release details soon.

Bungie announced plans to restore vaulted Destiny 2 content and expand Marathon into a deeper survival experience in a studio video released this week. Studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon general manager Josh Deane acknowledged the studio’s failure to communicate clearly with players and apologized for that lapse. Bungie added it will continue to create games and content set in the Destiny universe even as live-service support for Destiny 2 winds down later this year.

The developer confirmed it will unvault an initial roster of Destiny 2 packages, naming The Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken. Bungie warned the restoration will require substantial technical work: “Changes made to Destiny 2 since Beyond Light require us to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems.” The studio said it will publish specific timelines and technical details at a later date.

On Marathon, Bungie described plans to “expand Marathon to a deeper survival experience.” Planned updates will touch core systems and balance while maintaining accessibility for players who prefer PvE, PvP or hybrid PvPvE modes. The studio characterized the work as adjustments to deepen mechanics and extend the game’s longevity without locking out different play styles.

The announcements follow recent staffing and financial shifts at Bungie. Sony disclosed layoffs affecting teams that worked on Destiny 2 and reported that Marathon did not meet financial expectations. Bungie has not announced a formal sequel to Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 launched on PlayStation 4 in 2017 and is free-to-play on PS5, PC and Xbox Series X|S. Its most recent expansion, Renegades, arrived in December and an update called Monument of Triumph was released in July. Marathon is available on the same platforms. The studio indicated it will share concrete release schedules and technical information about the vaulted restorations and Marathon updates in future communications.
