Capcom Confirms Resident Evil Veronica Will Be Third-Person

Capcom confirms the Resident Evil Veronica remake will be third-person only. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said the debut trailer’s first-person footage was a deliberate misdirect.

Capcom has confirmed the Resident Evil Veronica remake will be presented entirely in third-person. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi told fans in a recent Q&A that the first-person footage in the game’s debut trailer was intended as a misdirect. The studio has ruled out a player option to switch perspectives for the two lead characters, Claire and Chris Redfield.

Hirabayashi added that the opening scene shown in the trailer may not appear in the final release.

Capcom’s recent remakes built in the RE Engine have used a third-person perspective. Earlier entries in the franchise experimented with perspective: Resident Evil Village launched in first-person and later received a third-person mode, while Resident Evil Requiem allowed switching between first and third-person for its protagonists. In Requiem, the first-person view was used for character Grace Ashcroft to reflect her limited experience with bio-organic threats; other combat-experienced characters were presented in third-person.

Capcom linked the decision for Veronica to the protagonists’ experience level. Claire and Chris, who survived the Raccoon City incident in earlier titles, are being portrayed as veteran characters in the remake, and the studio said it selected third-person to match their continuity and gameplay approach.

The studio has not provided further details about changes to trailer scenes or a release date. More information is expected as Capcom issues additional updates.
