Capcom confirmed Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold more than one million copies worldwide on its first day after launching Sept. 4, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

The title is the first new mainline Onimusha entry in over 20 years. It is set in Edo-era Kyoto and follows swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, whose in-game likeness is based on actor Toshiro Mifune.

Players face Genma demon hordes using close-range sword combat and supernatural Oni abilities. Capcom described the combat as combining precise timing with special powers.

Capcom promoted the game at public events and released a downloadable demo on the PlayStation Store before launch so players could try the sword-based combat.

Capcom reported the launch pushed cumulative Onimusha franchise sales past 10 million copies worldwide. The company continues to release entries in series including Resident Evil and Monster Hunter and is evaluating revivals of other older properties.
