Captain Tsubasa 2 review: World Youth arc brings 110 characters

Tamsoft and Bandai Namco released Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters on PS5, adapting the manga’s World Youth Arc, expanding gameplay and offering 110 playable characters.

Tamsoft and Bandai Namco released Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters on PlayStation 5. The game adapts the manga’s World Youth Arc and expands the gameplay of the earlier title.

Matches use a traditional soccer framework: players perform tackles, passes and dashes. The game adds a range of special skills, including powerful shots, high-speed dashes and defensive techniques that interrupt play. The defensive system places emphasis on predicting shot direction and managing goalkeeper stamina and wear.

Story mode centers on a player-created character who joins teams from the World Youth tournament. The mode features 110 playable characters, cutscenes, challenges, side scenarios such as ‘what if’ matchups, and link stories that explore teammates and rivals. Yoichi Takahashi, the original series creator, oversaw the plot content.

The release includes a detailed tutorial and a practice mode covering mechanics and systems. Multiplayer options include standard and private online matches and offline play against CPU opponents. More structured online features, such as tournament formats, were not present at launch.

Compared with the previous game, the sequel increases single-player content, adds scenario types and adjusts core systems for longer campaign play. The presentation alternates between cinematic story sequences and gameplay that uses both conventional soccer actions and animated special moves.

A review awarded the game 9 out of 10, noting the game’s anime visuals, soccer mechanics and expanded story content while pointing to limited multiplayer modes as an area for expansion.
