Cygames Confirms Project Awakening Still in Development
Cygames says Project Awakening, a PlayStation-exclusive RPG revealed in 2016, remains in development and is “starting to take shape,” company president Koichi Watanabe said.
Cygames confirmed that Project Awakening, an action role-playing game first revealed in 2016, is still in development. The title was shown as a PlayStation exclusive in 2018 and a trial build under the Arise subtitle was rated in 2019 but never released.
Speaking as part of the studio’s 15th anniversary coverage, Cygames president Koichi Watanabe said the team continues to work on the project and that development is progressing. He described the project as “really starting to take shape,” and said staff are working “each day with a real sense of confidence that things are coming together.” He also said, “The overall direction remains largely the same,” while the team polishes systems and adds new elements.
Cygames did not confirm which PlayStation hardware the game will target going forward, and the company provided no release window. The studio has not published a playable build publicly since the rated trial version in 2019.
Project Awakening was presented as an action RPG focused on high-fidelity visuals and large-scale combat. Beyond Watanabe’s remarks, Cygames offered no further details about gameplay, supported platforms beyond PlayStation, or a launch timetable.
The studio’s comments are the most detailed update the project has received in several years. Fans and industry observers will await a formal showcase or announcement for additional information.
