Dawnwalker lets players storm castle to save family

Rebel Wolves says The Blood of Dawnwalker can be finished by storming a vampire lord’s castle to rescue the protagonist’s family. Most quests are optional and in-game time advances with player actions.

Rebel Wolves, a Warsaw-based studio led by former Witcher 3 developers, says The Blood of Dawnwalker centers on a single explicit objective: enter the antagonist’s fortress, defeat a vampire lord and free the protagonist Coen’s family. The studio told reporters there are no mandatory prerequisites to reach that objective.

Developers say every other story strand is optional. Lead quest designer Rafał Jankowski described the rule plainly: “To finish The Blood of Dawnwalker, all you need to do is storm the antagonist’s castle, face them in combat, and rescue the family. There are no additional requirements or prerequisites that you need to tick off, which means that all the stories that we prepared for the players are somewhat optional.”

Rebel Wolves stated that optional quests typically provide allies, abilities and intelligence about enemies, resources players can use when attempting a direct assault on the fortress. Those elements are generally obtained outside the castle rather than as prerequisites to enter it.

Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz compared the game’s quest structure to a pen-and-paper role-playing game and noted players will shape their own path through the content. He described the quests as “almost every quest in the game is like a side quest, and they are meaningful. They are creating one whole experience for the player,” and said the design leaves players to choose how to reach the central objective.

The studio outlined a time system in which hours and days pass based on the player’s actions rather than a fixed calendar. Rebel Wolves noted timing can change what content appears during a playthrough and that not all storylines will be visible in a single run, so multiple playthroughs will present different combinations of encounters and narrative threads.

Rebel Wolves emphasized the project’s focus on player agency. The studio did not provide a release date or specific details on how difficulty will scale for attempts to assault the castle early in a playthrough.
