10 Years Later: DOOM (2016) Still Runs at 4K/60 on Xbox Series X

Ten years after its May 13, 2016 Xbox launch, DOOM (2016) runs locked at 4K/60 FPS on Xbox Series X via an Xbox One X patch and reintroduced fast-paced combat.

DOOM (2016), developed by id Software and published by Bethesda, launched on Xbox One on May 13, 2016. The game returned the series to fast, arena-style combat after an earlier title focused on survival-horror. The reboot emphasized rapid movement, heavy weapon variety and aggressive level design set across Mars and Hell.

Post-launch updates included a performance patch prepared for Xbox One X hardware around 2018. That patch enables a locked 4K resolution and 60 frames per second output when the game is played on Xbox Series X hardware, providing stable frame timing and higher visual fidelity without a separate next-generation remaster.

DOOM (2016) did not receive a dedicated Series X upgrade. Instead, the Xbox One X optimisation remains the primary way to run the game at 4K/60 on Microsoft’s current console. The title is still available on Xbox platforms and can be played on Xbox Series X with the enhanced output produced by the previous-gen patch.

The 2016 release preceded id Software’s later projects in the franchise, including DOOM Eternal and the announced DOOM: The Dark Ages. The studio continued to develop new entries and updates after the 2016 reboot.

Technical details: the Xbox One X patch adjusts resolution scaling and performance targets to reach 4K/60 on compatible hardware. On Xbox Series X, the game uses the backward-compatible build rather than a Series X–specific remaster, and players report consistent frame rates and resolution when the console runs the patched version.

DOOM (2016) remains listed on digital storefronts for Xbox and accessible via backward compatibility on current Xbox hardware.
