Dragon Quest Monsters game details combat and synthesis

Square Enix revealed combat systems and a Synthesis mechanic for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, where players can field four monsters and fuse two to inherit traits; it launches Dec. 3, 2026.

Square Enix confirmed core combat mechanics and a new Synthesis system for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, and set a release date of Dec. 3, 2026. The game will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and PC.

Players assemble a party of monsters to fight other creatures. Up to four monsters can be active in combat with an additional four kept in reserve. During encounters players can issue direct commands to individual monsters or assign a general strategy for the group. Each monster can use spells and abilities and carries traits that affect its behavior and performance in battles.

The Synthesis system lets players combine two monsters to create a new creature. The offspring inherit traits from both parents, allowing specific abilities or behavior patterns to transfer into a single monster. Players can use the feature to refine rosters and produce hybrids tailored to chosen combat roles.

Reserve slots enable teams to be adjusted between battles or while exploring. Traits influence which spells or actions a monster may favor under a selected strategy. Synthesis provides a progression path that complements leveling and equipment changes.

The Withered World continues the series’ focus on recruiting, training and combining monsters rather than relying mainly on human characters. Square Enix described the combat and synthesis features as central elements of party customization and long-term team building.
