Dragon Quest Monsters: Withered World outlines combat, synthesis

Square Enix revealed combat mechanics and a Synthesis system for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. The company confirmed the game will launch on December 3, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and PC.

Players can field up to four active monsters and keep four additional monsters in reserve. In battles, commands can be issued to individual monsters or a general tactic can be assigned to the whole team. Monsters use a range of spells and abilities, and their positioning and timing factor into combat decisions.

Every monster carries a set of traits that affect its behavior and effectiveness in fights. Those traits interact with the tactical directives players set for their team. The option to use broad strategies is available for players who prefer less micromanagement during routine encounters.

The Synthesis system lets players fuse two monsters into a single new creature. The resulting monster inherits traits from both parent monsters, allowing players to combine specific traits through repeated synthesis. Square Enix described the system as a way to create party members by selecting parents with desirable traits.

Square Enix said the game will pit player-assembled monster teams against other monsters across its RPG framework. The publisher noted additional systems intended to expand how players build and manage rosters, but did not disclose details on progression, rarity, or synthesis restrictions.
