Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition for Switch 2

Square Enix will release DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 on Sept. 26, 2026, with new party-focused story chapters and a switchable 3D/2D mode.

Square Enix will release DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 on Sept. 26, 2026. The publisher announced the date alongside a debut trailer and confirmed the title includes new story chapters, presentation options and audio upgrades.

The Definitive Edition bundles the full Erdran campaign with new chapters that center on party members within the main plot rather than a separate side campaign. Square Enix described the story with the line “What does it mean to be a hero?” and said the package lets players play the entire Erdran adventure in one release.

The Switch 2 version lets players switch between modern 3D graphics and a 2D presentation. It also offers language and voice options, including Japanese voices and additional English voice tracks, and an orchestral score as part of the audio enhancements.

New optimization modes allow users to prioritize graphical quality or system performance, giving control over frame rate and rendering depending on player preference. The reintroduction of a 2D mode matches earlier releases that offered a retro-style presentation alongside the 3D role-playing experience.

Square Enix revealed the Definitive Edition after the game received an age rating earlier this year. The publisher did not provide further technical specifications for the Switch 2 build at the announcement.

DRAGON QUEST XI first appeared in Japan on Nintendo 3DS on July 29, 2017, and later on Nintendo Switch on Sept. 27, 2019. The Sept. 26, 2026 release updates the Switch version with the new story content and the technical and audio features described by Square Enix.

The announcement arrives while fans await additional details about the next numbered series entry, Dragon Quest XII. Square Enix’s trailer and official description present the Definitive Edition as a single release aimed at both returning players and newcomers.
