Early 007 First Light Discs Require Day-One Patch
Some physical copies of 007 First Light are appearing before May 27, but most of the single-player campaign is delivered via a required day-one patch.
Physical copies of 007 First Light have reached retail before the game’s official May 27 release. Players with early discs can boot the game and access a limited portion of content, but the discs do not contain the full single-player campaign.
IO Interactive addressed the issue in a developer Q&A and said the full game is provided through a launch-day download. “No, it’s not necessarily always online, you have to download the first patch to get the actual game. Once you’ve downloaded that, you can pull out your plug and play it offline if you want,” the studio explained.
Players who buy a physical copy will need to download the day-one patch to access the full campaign. Once the patch is installed, single-player play does not require a persistent internet connection if the user chooses to play offline.
Early-distributed discs allow entry into small sections of the game but do not unlock the majority of narrative content until the patch is applied. A report from a player that an early disc boots and appears to let them start the campaign aligns with IO Interactive’s statement that most story content is delivered by the launch-day download.
Players who receive a retail copy before May 27 and lack internet access will be limited to the content included on the disc. IO Interactive’s Q&A indicates the developer configured distribution so the complete game is tied to the launch-day patch.
