Ed Boon Confirms NetherRealm Pursuing New Mortal Kombat
NetherRealm Studios is pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, co-creator Ed Boon confirmed. The studio has multiple projects in development and plans forthcoming announcements amid Injustice 3 rumors.
Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, confirmed the studio is pursuing another Mortal Kombat game and is working on multiple projects across games and other media. He said several announcements are planned but gave no dates.
Boon made the remarks in a recent interview as the Mortal Kombat 2 film opened in U.S. theaters. He did not specify whether the studio’s next title will be a Mortal Kombat entry or name a release window.
“We’re definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we’re doing more as well. We have a lot of great announcements coming,” Boon said.
Industry reports have pointed to development of a new Injustice title. Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013) and Injustice 2 (2017) are the previous mainline DC fighting-game releases; a new entry would be the first mainline Injustice release in nearly a decade.
NetherRealm’s most recent numbered Mortal Kombat release, Mortal Kombat 1, did not meet the franchise’s historical commercial benchmarks. Planned post-launch support for that title ended after roughly 20 months despite earlier statements that support would continue for several years.
The studio develops both the Mortal Kombat and Injustice series and works on licensed media adaptations. NetherRealm has not provided schedules or further development details for its upcoming projects.
