Elliot: The Millennium Tales balances exploration, combat

Square Enix’s action RPG The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales launches on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC on June 18, combining exploration, combat and progression.

Square Enix will release The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC on June 18. The action RPG is set in Philabieldia and follows a young adventurer, Elliot, and his fairy companion, Faie, after they discover a set of ruins outside the Kingdom of Huther. The narrative spans four ages and frames a thousand-year mission that begins with an initial expedition and expands into travel across open plains, hidden caves and ancient ruins.

The game’s areas are designed to reward exploration. Developers placed hidden paths, optional shrines and breakable objects that can yield crafting materials, upgrades and other items. Players can control Faie independently with the right stick to scout ahead, retrieve distant objects and attack enemies without moving Elliot into direct danger.

Combat is integrated with exploration rather than separated from it. Elliot can use seven weapon types, including swords, bows, chains and sickles, and equip two weapons at once to swap between them in real time. A block performed with the R button can reduce damage, stun enemies or reflect some attacks. The team describes combining weapon switching, blocking and Faie’s support as ways to change how encounters are approached.

Weapons can be modified through a magicite system. Magicite fragments, found in dungeons, provide stat boosts or change weapon behavior, allowing players to experiment with different builds and tactics. The game also includes optional activities such as a cat-collecting side quest and Faie’s Magic Lessons, which feature mini-games like sprint-based challenges. Completing these activities can unlock records for the in-game soundtrack and provide progression benefits.

Merchants sell accessories, including an Explosive Brooch that converts thrown items into explosive projectiles; the item is listed as expensive. Ordinary pots, crates and grass patches can contain loot. A digital preorder bonus, Elliot’s Departure Pack, is available through June 17 at 23:59 and includes a Departure brooch accessory and an Attack up sword magicite; Square Enix has indicated bonus contents may be sold separately later.

The title was developed by teams behind Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default. It uses HD-2D visuals combined with action-adventure mechanics and will be available on the stated Xbox platforms on June 18.
