Ember Lab: Working on a Zelda Title Would Be ‘Quite Exciting’
Ember Lab’s COO says the Kena studio, creator of a 2016 Majora’s Mask fan film, would welcome the chance to work on The Legend of Zelda while it finishes Kena’s sequel.
Ember Lab, developer of Kena: Bridge of Spirits, described working on a Legend of Zelda title as ‘quite exciting’ in a recent interview. Josh Grier, the studio’s chief operating officer, said the team grew up playing Zelda and that the series influenced many of their creative choices.
Grier pointed to Ember Lab’s 2016 short film The Terrible Fate, based on Majora’s Mask, as an example of the team’s long-standing interest in the series. He added the studio is focused on Kena: Scars of Kosmora, the announced sequel scheduled for release later this year, but would consider a Zelda project if Nintendo allowed use of the intellectual property.
Ember Lab began as a small creative team that produced fan projects before moving into commercial games. The studio’s first major release, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, emphasizes animation, character-based storytelling and environmental puzzles.
Grier noted any work on a Zelda title would require Nintendo’s approval and a formal agreement to use the franchise’s intellectual property. For now, the studio is concentrating on finishing and promoting the Kena sequel.
