Ex-Sega Exec Accuses Yuji Naka of Stealing Sonic Credit

Former Sega executive Mike Fischer accused Yuji Naka of taking credit for Sonic, called him “the most miserable person” he worked with, and noted Naka is a convicted felon.

Mike Fischer, a former Sega executive, told an interviewer that Yuji Naka took credit for creating Sonic the Hedgehog and claimed Naka publicly accepted authorship for work done by others. Fischer included a direct criticism of Naka, saying, “He is literally the most miserable person I have ever worked with in games or anything else in my life, just a horrible human being, and you can quote me on that.” He also noted Naka is a convicted felon.

Fischer recalled that Sega asked employees to propose a new mascot aimed at competing with Mario and that he watched the winning concepts being selected. He identified Naoto Ōshima as the character designer who created Sonic’s look, Hirokazu Yasuhara as the game designer, and Yuji Naka as the programmer, and said he witnessed Naka present himself as the character’s creator.

He described his time at Sega as hands-on and said he worked on both console and handheld efforts. Fischer noted the Genesis had already shipped in the U.S. when he joined, while the Game Gear was still being prepared for release. He said he translated repair documents and named the Gear-to-Gear cable.

Fischer disputed public statements he heard from Naka, including remarks Naka made while accepting a lifetime achievement award and interviews in which Naka discussed creative choices such as Sonic’s color. Fischer attributed the design and color decisions to Ōshima and praised Ōshima as “one of the most wonderful, kindhearted people you’ll ever meet.”

He related one positive example involving Naka: after discovering a group in China producing bootleg Dreamcast ports, Naka reportedly bought the operation and hired the team to handle official ports.

Fischer said he agreed to speak to set the record straight about who did what on Sonic’s development. His remarks provide a firsthand account that contributes to ongoing discussion about the distribution of credit for Sonic the Hedgehog’s creation.
