Fallout 76 free Series X|S upgrade adds 4K, 60 FPS

Bethesda will release a free current-gen upgrade for Fallout 76 this summer; public tests start in June and target 60 FPS and up to 4K on compatible consoles.

Bethesda plans a free current-generation upgrade for Fallout 76 this summer, with public testing beginning in June. The studio says the update targets 60 frames per second on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5/Pro and adds higher-resolution and display improvements on compatible hardware.

Anyone who already owns Fallout 76 can download the test builds from the Xbox and PlayStation stores when testing begins. Bethesda will post details on how to participate on its social channels and expects to ship the full update later in the summer after testing concludes.

The upgrade aims for a 60 FPS target on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro and includes improved draw distances and enhanced shadow rendering. On compatible displays, Xbox Series X, Xbox One X and PS5 Pro can run the game at 4K. PS5 and PS4 Pro will support 1440p, while older-generation platforms will remain at 1080p. Variable Refresh Rate support is planned for Xbox Series S, Series X, PS5 and PS5 Pro when used with compatible displays.

The upgrade will be provided at no additional cost to existing Fallout 76 owners. The June public tests are intended to let players try rebuilt builds so the team can gather feedback and address issues before the wider release. No official screenshots or video footage of the upgraded versions have been released.

In a post on the game’s official site, Bethesda wrote: “During the month of June we will be kicking off public testing of the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5/Pro versions of the game. Available to everyone who owns Fallout 76, you will be able to download the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 test versions from the Xbox and PlayStation Stores. Once testing is completed, we plan on releasing the update later this summer. Please stay tuned to our social channels for more information on how you can participate in this testing period.”

The announcement arrives alongside a separate Infestation update that goes live the same day; full patch notes are published on Bethesda’s official website. Fallout 76 launched in November 2018 as an online multiplayer entry in the Fallout series and has received regular updates and seasonal content since release.
