Fans Divided Over New Link in Ocarina of Time Switch 2

Nintendo confirmed a Switch 2 remake during yesterday’s Direct and released a 1 minute 36 second trailer. The company said the game will launch sometime this year. The trailer shows a redesigned, more realistic version of Link, detailed visuals and a short piece of voiced narration. Nintendo did not show gameplay in the reveal.

Reactions to Link’s new appearance were mixed. Some reviewers praised the added detail and a darker, more realistic art direction. One reviewer called the design ‘A bit shiny — pink and elf-y — but fine from what we’ve seen.’ Another wrote that it is ‘way too early to judge’ and expressed interest in how a consistent realistic style might look across remakes.

Other commentators were critical. A former technology editor described the footage as ‘clean, polished, realistic, and utterly dull.’ Some fans compared the model to high-fidelity fan projects or modern engine demos and said the redesign could reduce the character’s original charm.

Observers posted side-by-side comparisons of the same opening scene from the original Nintendo 64 release, the 3DS remake, and the Switch 2 reveal. Those images highlight differences in model proportions, facial features and texture work across the three versions.

Nintendo has not provided a firm release date or detailed information about gameplay changes, animation or the scope of voice acting. The company said more information will be released ahead of launch later this year. Fans are awaiting additional footage to assess movement, combat and environment updates.

Ocarina of Time originally launched on the Nintendo 64 and later received a handheld remake for the 3DS with updated graphics and mechanical adjustments. The Switch 2 announcement is the latest remake of a classic title for modern hardware.
