Fans want six changes to Ocarina of Time remake
Fans listed six changes they want in the Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2, due later this year: longer day/night, optional Navi prompts, no area loading screens, richer Hyrule Field, reloads at current location and more agency for Princess Ruto.
Fans and players have outlined six specific changes they want in the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake for Nintendo’s Switch 2, which is scheduled to arrive later this year. The requests focus on technical updates and optional settings rather than story changes. Early footage shows a more realistic Hyrule, but Nintendo has not confirmed whether the project will be a direct remake or a larger reimagining.
Players called for a longer day/night cycle. In the original game the sun and moon cross the sky within a few minutes of play time. Players say a slower cycle would give more time to explore the overworld and to experience daytime and nighttime music. Some suggested adding daytime enemy variety to keep longer sessions engaging.
Many players requested fewer Navi prompts or an option to disable them. In the original, Navi provides frequent guidance and interruptions. The proposed option would let experienced players reduce or remove those prompts while leaving them available for newcomers.
Players also asked for the removal of loading screens between major areas. On the original hardware, transitions such as the Kokiri Forest to Hyrule Field route and dungeon entrances use short loads. Without those loads, players say, movement across the map could be seamless on modern hardware.
Several comments focused on Hyrule Field. Instead of only increasing its size, players proposed adding more points of interest, varied encounters and environmental details that give purpose to travel between locations. Some referenced design elements from more recent entries in the series as examples of activities that can reward exploration.
Save behavior drew attention as well. The original game often places the player at a fixed restart location after reloading. Players requested an option to restore Link to the exact location where the save was recorded, with a toggle to preserve the original restart behavior for those who prefer it.
Players also asked for changes to Princess Ruto’s sequence in Jabu-Jabu’s belly. In the original Ruto must be carried by Link for some puzzle sections. Suggested alternatives include allowing Ruto to walk on her own or granting a button-activated ability to assist navigation.
One editor described the title screen as “So understated, so beautiful,” and said it should remain unchanged. The original Ocarina of Time released in 1998 and received a major update for handheld in 2011. Players proposed including optional toggles so individuals can choose modern conveniences while keeping core elements intact.
