FF7 Rebirth on Xbox: 30fps Stable, 60fps Prone to Drops
Technical testing finds Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth holds a steady 30fps on Xbox Series X and S, while the 60fps mode shows frequent drops, camera-judder and VRR issues ahead of June 3.
Technical testing ahead of the game’s June 3 Xbox launch finds Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth runs consistently at 30 frames per second on both Xbox Series X and Series S, while the 60fps performance mode experiences frequent frame-rate drops, camera-judder and variable refresh rate problems.
The 30fps graphics option provides a consistent presentation on both consoles. The Series X maintains a native 4K image at 30fps, and the Series S delivers a stable 30fps target at its native output. Testers report both platforms offer a reliable image and pacing in that mode.
The 60fps performance mode shows repeated drops below 60fps, with some scenes falling into the 40s. Variable refresh rate (VRR) does not engage correctly in many situations, and a persistent camera-judder bug affects performance runs on both consoles. The report attributes the judder to uneven intervals in camera movement updates, which can create the perception of frame-rate drops even when timing measurements indicate a steady 60fps.
In stress tests the smaller Series S sometimes reaches higher frame rates than the Series X. Lower foliage density on the Series S reduces GPU load in certain areas, allowing frame rates to reach the high 50s where the Series X sits nearer to 50fps. Changing the console system refresh to 120Hz can lift framerate limits, but testers note this does not eliminate the performance mode’s oscillation near 60fps or fix the camera-judder.
Many of the same drops and bugs observed in the free demo remained in the retail build available for testing. A separate console version has shown improvement since its demo, running at a more stable 30fps lock in current tests despite its hardware constraints.
The game is available to pre-order on the Xbox Store for £39.99 / $39.99 ahead of the June 3 release. The technical report summarizes: “The 30fps graphics mode is generally stable and commendable on both Series X and S,” and concludes that “while the 30fps modes on Xbox are solid, the 60fps alternative has too many unaddressed drops and bugs.”
