Final Fantasy VII Remake director urges franchise growth
Naoki Hamaguchi urges Square Enix to expand Final Fantasy for the next generation.
In a recent interview, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy and head of a Square Enix studio, said the company should expand the Final Fantasy franchise for the next generation as the trilogy nears its conclusion.
Hamaguchi described plans to revise his studio’s approach to future titles to add more depth to game worlds and characters. He noted the team is weighing how to grow the franchise’s reach while remaining open to different game formats if players show interest in new experiences.
He expects to oversee a larger number of projects as a studio head and to shift from directing every title personally toward supervising multiple teams. Hamaguchi said he intends to continue producing games aimed at players who hold high expectations for his work and his studio.
“We are constantly updating our vision on what kind of experiences we can offer next,” he added. “I want to meet the expectations of fans who desire even more depth in this world and its characters. On the other hand, I am very aware of the need to consider how we can expand the potential of the Final Fantasy franchise as a whole for the next generation. That commitment will not change.”
