Final Fantasy XIV Switch 2 trailer, early access in August

Square Enix released a Nintendo Switch 2 gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy XIV and announced an approximately one-month early access period starting August 2026.

Square Enix released a gameplay trailer showing Final Fantasy XIV running on the Nintendo Switch 2. The clip followed a sizzle reel appearance near the end of Nintendo’s recent Direct and combines short gameplay segments with in-game cutscenes, providing a clear look at the Switch 2 build.

The publisher posted details to its support page that the Switch 2 version will enter an early access period in August 2026 that will run for roughly one month. Early access will be used to help ensure server stability; official service for the Switch 2 edition will begin once Square Enix confirms systems are stable. The Switch 2 release is a separate edition of the game optimized for Nintendo’s next handheld-home hybrid.

Square Enix outlined purchase and subscription requirements for the Switch 2 release. Players who are new to Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2 must buy the game for that platform and subscribe to play. Players who already play on other platforms will need to buy the Nintendo Switch 2 edition and maintain a separate subscription for the Switch 2 version. The company said players with remaining prepaid game time on other platforms will be eligible for a half-price Switch 2 subscription. A Nintendo Switch Online membership will not be required during the early access period or after official launch.

The trailer includes brief combat sequences, character movement and cinematic cutscenes to illustrate how the title runs on the new hardware. Square Enix did not provide further technical specifications or a broader release window for the Switch 2 build in the materials accompanying the trailer.

Square Enix also confirmed a new HD-2D title, Final Fantasy Resonance, scheduled to launch on both Switch and Switch 2 in October 2026.
