Fire Flower becomes first power-up in Super Mario Galaxy film
Writer Matthew Fogel credited fan feedback with making the Fire Flower the first power-up Mario and Luigi receive in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Writer Matthew Fogel traced the change to fan feedback, which led filmmakers to make the Fire Flower the first power-up Mario and Luigi receive in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Fogel said the decision followed fans noting that past screen adaptations rarely show the brothers obtaining that particular power-up, and the creative team adjusted the screenplay to address that gap.
Fogel offered a direct explanation: “One thing we definitely heard from fans — and we felt as well — was that we never saw Mario and Luigi get the Fire Flower power-up. That’s why that’s the first power-up they get in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.”
The Fire Flower has appeared in Super Mario games since the series’ early titles. In the games it grants characters the ability to throw fireballs and changes their appearance when collected.
Fogel noted the screenplay includes several moments that reference classic game mechanics and items, and production has expressed interest in including additional recognizable power-ups in future installments.
Fogel described the change as part of a production approach that incorporated fan feedback during development, aiming to place a familiar game element in an early on-screen power-up scene.
