Forever Ago demo ties store stop to Alfred’s memories

At Summer Game Fest: Play Days, a demo of Forever Ago showed a convenience-store scene that triggers memory flashbacks for its elderly protagonist, Alfred.

At Summer Game Fest: Play Days, Annapurna Interactive presented a hands-on demo of the narrative game Forever Ago. The demo focused on a convenience store stop that triggers memory flashbacks for the game’s protagonist, Alfred. The title is scheduled to release Oct. 8, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC and will support Xbox Play Anywhere.

The demo opens with Alfred driving a vintage camper van into a forested gas station. Inside, a young attendant responds to a question about the owner by saying ‘He’s passed on’ and then correcting to ‘Oh, he’s retired now.’ Alfred recoils and moves through a detailed store with a handbasket, commenting on snacks, camping gear and boxed goods.

Alfred spots a photograph behind the register showing him, the store owner and his wife, Audrey. An exchange over the photo escalates; the attendant presses to keep the picture as Alfred grows agitated, takes the photograph and leaves. Back in the camper, viewing the photo cuts to a flashback of a younger Alfred and Audrey visiting the same location. The sequence shifts into a darker, dreamlike memory and the demo ends soon after.

The demo illustrated gameplay features that include single-player exploration across environments ranging from forest trails to desert terrain, object interactions to learn about local characters, and an instant camera used to capture images and solve small environmental puzzles. The game also includes a canine companion and voice-acted encounters. The soundtrack is composed by Clark Aboud.

Annapurna Interactive is publishing Forever Ago. The game will be available Oct. 8, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, and Xbox Play Anywhere will allow access across console and PC without additional platform cost.
