Former SEGA VP: Sonic CD Remake Reported

Mike Fischer, former SEGA of America vice president, told an interviewer he had heard SEGA is remaking Sonic CD for modern platforms. He suggested the project could be revealed at upcoming video game showcases, including Summer Game Fest.

Fischer commented, “I’ve heard that they’re remaking Sonic CD, which would be wonderful. That was my favorite Sonic game.” He did not name platform targets, the studio handling development, or a release timeline. His remarks amount to an industry tip rather than an official SEGA announcement.

SEGA’s fiscal report for the year ending March 2022 attributed part of its forecasted revenue growth for FY2023 to new titles as well as remasters and remakes. The company’s guidance included plans that reference reworking older games.

The Sonic franchise currently has multiple active projects: a third update for Sonic Frontiers is planned, new episodes of the animated series Sonic Prime have recently premiered, and Sonic Superstars is scheduled to release later this year.

Sonic CD, originally released in 1993 for the Sega CD add-on, is known for its soundtrack, time-travel mechanics, and distinctive level design. The title has appeared in compilations and re-releases, but a full modern-generation remake would be the first comprehensive reworking for current consoles and PC.

SEGA has not confirmed a Sonic CD remake. Until the company issues an official announcement, platform targets, graphical direction, retained or revised gameplay elements, and release windows remain unverified. Observers will watch upcoming industry showcases and publisher presentations for any formal reveal.
