Playground Games developed Forza Horizon 6 and Microsoft published the title. The sixth mainline entry in the open-world racing series is set in Japan and will release next week for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a PlayStation 5 edition confirmed for later this year.

Metacritic’s average of 92 is based on over 60 critic reviews and carries the site’s ‘universal acclaim’ designation. The score matches the average posted by the previous franchise entry.

Reviews that contributed to the score cited technical performance, visual fidelity and the scale of the Japan map. Multiple critiques highlighted stable frame rates, detailed audio work and varied environments that range from mountain roads to dense urban areas. Several reviews noted that the map encourages exploration across distinct driving conditions.

Critics pointed to a large car roster and extensive customization options as strengths. Many reviews described the game’s presentation and driving feel as strong across different vehicle types and terrains.

Some reviews also identified limitations. Observations included that the series’ formula remains similar to past entries, which may feel familiar to long-time players. Other critiques called for stronger rival-driver characterization, greater variety in event types in some regions and more impactful crash physics. One reviewer described the game as running “like a titan,” and another called it a “masterpiece.”

Playground Games has indicated plans for ongoing updates and live-service content after launch. The game arrives next week on Xbox Series X|S and PC; the PlayStation 5 version is scheduled for release later this year.
