Fumito Ueda had hoped to remake ICO with Bluepoint

Fumito Ueda learned of Bluepoint’s closure at the same time as the public and described the news as disappointing. He had hoped to work with the studio on a remake of ICO. Ueda said: “We had no heads‑up. I heard about it at the same time you did in the news, and it was disappointing and sad to hear. I would have hoped that maybe in the future there could be a chance to work with them on something. Maybe ICO.”

Bluepoint developed remakes of Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus and handled the 2011 ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD collection. Those projects gave the studio direct experience with Ueda’s earlier titles.

Sony closed Bluepoint earlier this year after cancelling a God of War live‑service project. Industry sources indicated the studio had proposed an expanded second remake of Shadow of the Colossus before the closure; Sony declined that proposal and the teams did not agree on a follow‑up project.

Ueda left PlayStation before The Last Guardian was completed and later founded the independent studio genDESIGN. genDESIGN collaborated with Japan Studio to finish The Last Guardian for PlayStation 4. Ueda’s next game, gen ATLAS, is planned for PlayStation 5 and will be published by Epic and released on multiple platforms without direct involvement from Sony.

Ueda pointed to Bluepoint’s prior work on his games when naming ICO as a title he would have liked to revisit with the studio.
