Physical PlayStation 5 discs for Gothic 1 Remake require a roughly 5GB day-one download to run, and some early boxed copies reached customers before packaging noted that requirement. Alkimia Interactive wrote on X that it shipped some physical copies early so players could launch the game at the official release time. The developer added: “Gothic 1 Remake will need a download of around 5GB on launch day and will then be fully playable offline – NO permanent Internet connection is needed.” Players reported on social platforms that the game would not run from the disc until the patch installed. One user posted: “And what happens if someone sticks the disk into their drive 10 years later? Will it then just fail to work? You gotta think about these things. DRM is harming your customers… It has to stop.” The release follows the Game Key Disc model, in which the physical disc carries limited game data and requires additional downloads to provide the full title. Publishers use the format to ensure the version available at launch includes the latest fixes. Collectors and preservation advocates expressed concern about long-term access when a disc needs an update to be playable. They and some customers have called for clearer packaging information about required downloads and for distribution options that preserve offline playability. Some retail customers said they would prefer a delayed release date if that would allow the final, complete version to be included on the disc.
