GTA 6 Weather: Localized Hurricanes Force New Tactics
Rockstar says Grand Theft Auto VI will include localized tropical storms and full hurricanes in Vice City, with weather affecting visibility, movement and NPC behavior across the map.
Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will include localized tropical storms and full hurricanes across Vice City, making weather an active gameplay element on the game’s Leonida map.
In a recent studio feature, Rockstar outlined a dynamic weather engine that generates isolated rain showers, tropical storms and full hurricanes in specific parts of the map rather than applying the same conditions everywhere. The studio says these events can be persistent and move across regions, leaving one neighborhood flooded or battered while a nearby block remains dry.
The developer reworked wind and precipitation systems so weather will affect physics, visuals and NPC reactions. Tom Shepherd, co-studio head at Rockstar San Diego, described the changes as a re-engineering of the weather system to make conditions more localized and persistent and to achieve a scale the studio had not reached before.
Rockstar said rain can appear only in small areas, creating puddles under lampposts and at street corners while adjacent streets stay dry. NPCs will react by getting drenched when caught in showers. Wind gusts are designed to move loose objects and debris across rooftops, ripple water surfaces and bend grass in swamp areas.
The studio said localized storms and dynamic wind will reduce visibility, change road conditions and affect movement. Large-scale hurricanes will act as an additional environmental hazard that players will encounter during missions and open-world activities.
Players reacted on social media to the weather details. One user wrote, “Omg, that’s gonna be SO realistic.” Another posted, “Hurricanes in Vice City? Driving just got way more dangerous.” Other posts referenced new survival priorities and the potential for storms to interfere with police chases.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. Rockstar said the weather system will influence how players approach travel and encounters in the game.
