GTA V Nears 230 Million Sales; Only GTA VI May Surpass

Take-Two Interactive reported in its latest financial filing that Grand Theft Auto V has sold nearly 230 million units worldwide, placing the game among the best-selling video games on record.

The company said it updated prior sales totals for the open-world title but did not provide a breakdown by platform or by retail versus digital sales. GTA V debuted on PlayStation 3 in 2013, released on PlayStation 4 in 2014 and reached PlayStation 5 in 2022; those successive releases contributed to continued purchases.

GTA V’s sustained sales have been supported by its single-player campaign and by Grand Theft Auto Online, the persistent multiplayer component that continues to receive content updates and generate revenue through in-game purchases.

The filing also reported franchise performance for other titles. Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold more than 85 million units, according to the company. Revenue from both games contributed to Take-Two’s recent financial results.

Rockstar Games has indicated Grand Theft Auto VI remains on track for a November launch. Take-Two has not published sales forecasts for GTA VI. Industry attention is focused on whether the forthcoming title will match or exceed GTA V’s cumulative sales.
