GTA V PS4, Xbox One owners get free next-gen upgrade

Rockstar will let GTA V owners on PS4 and Xbox One upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for free starting tomorrow; saved story progress and GTA Online characters can be migrated.

Rockstar announced that owners of Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, whether they have a physical disc or a digital copy, can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions for free starting tomorrow. The upgrade will be available through each platform’s digital store; PlayStation owners should look for the upgraded edition on the PlayStation Store.

The company is offering a migration option to transfer single-player saved progress and GTA Online characters and progress to the newer consoles. The migration covers story mode saves and linked online accounts so players can continue from their existing progress on current-generation hardware.

Rockstar is releasing an update for GTA Online alongside the enhanced next-gen edition that introduces new content aimed at longtime players. The update is tied to the enhanced release and is intended to give players reasons to move to the updated version.

Grand Theft Auto V launched in 2013 and is set in the fictional state of San Andreas. The game follows three protagonists whose stories intersect. It remains one of the best-selling video games and continues to have an active online player base through GTA Online.

Rockstar confirmed the next main entry in the series, Grand Theft Auto VI, is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Owners of GTA V on PS4 and Xbox One should check the PlayStation Store and Xbox storefronts tomorrow and follow Rockstar’s instructions to transfer saved data.
