Haunted Chocolatier Will Be Larger Than Stardew Valley
ConcernedApe developer Eric Barone says Haunted Chocolatier will have more maps, monsters, deeper item and equipment systems and is being built on a new engine.
Eric Barone, the solo developer behind Stardew Valley, told an interviewer that Haunted Chocolatier will be larger than his previous game. He described more maps, a greater number of enemies, and expanded item and equipment mechanics.
Barone used a direct comparison to Stardew Valley when outlining scope. “It’s way bigger than Stardew Valley, at least in terms of the amount of maps, the amount of monsters, the depth to the whole item system, and all the equipment slots and all the stuff like this. Everything is cranked up,” he said.
Development is split between Haunted Chocolatier and ongoing work on Stardew Valley. Barone is working seven days a week, devoting five days to Haunted Chocolatier and two days to the Stardew 1.7 update.
Haunted Chocolatier is being written from scratch on a new engine rather than using Stardew Valley’s codebase. Barone said that technical differences make it impractical to add Haunted Chocolatier content to Stardew Valley.
“No. First, I am not going to abandon Haunted Chocolatier. But even if I did, I am not going to add it to Stardew Valley. Stardew Valley and Haunted Chocolatier are separate games. It doesn’t even make sense from a technical perspective, as Haunted Chocolatier is written from scratch, it’s not the same ‘engine’ as Stardew Valley. You can’t just copy and paste Haunted Chocolatier into Stardew Valley,” he said.
Earlier this year Barone acknowledged he announced Haunted Chocolatier earlier than planned. He reiterated that he intends to continue development on both titles while managing his schedule between them.
Details mentioned for the Stardew Valley 1.7 update include new marriage candidates, changes to how children are handled in the game, and a farm layout editor that lets players change their farm rather than selecting a preset. Barone said he is actively working on those additions alongside development of Haunted Chocolatier.
Haunted Chocolatier does not have a release date. Barone emphasized the two projects are separate products built on different technical foundations.
