Hironobu Sakaguchi Praises AI-Made Final Fantasy VI Fan Video

Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi reposted an AI-generated fan video imagining a Final Fantasy VI remake on X, writing, “What is this?! That’s amazing!”

Hironobu Sakaguchi reposted an AI-generated fan video on X this week that imagines a remake of Final Fantasy VI. He added the caption, “What is this?! That’s amazing!” The short reaction drew attention from fans and other game developers.

The clip uses generative AI to recreate scenes and character models from the 1994 role-playing game. Viewers reported visual artifacts common to current AI tools, including uneven character motion, inconsistent proportions-Terra appears larger than nearby figures in some scenes-and facial details described by viewers as expressionless.

Akitoshi Kawazu, director of Romancing SaGa, replied on X with the comment, “No, Sakaguchi-san, you should have stopped at the first line.” Some fans said they would welcome an official Final Fantasy VI remake, while others criticized the AI rendering as an inadequate preview of a proper remake.

Sakaguchi’s repost comes as Square Enix prepares Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for the Switch 2, the second entry in a planned trilogy remaking the PlayStation original. A demo for Rebirth is available on Nintendo’s console.

The post prompted discussion about the use of AI to reinterpret classic game characters and settings. Creators and fans offered a range of reactions, noting both the speculative appeal of such clips and the current technical limitations of AI video tools.
