Insomniac’s Wolverine for PS5 is linear, globe-hopping action
Insomniac confirmed Marvel’s Wolverine for PS5 will be a linear, globe-hopping single-player action game with mission-based structure and optional stealth routes, due later this year.
According to Game Director Mike Daly, Insomniac Games confirmed Marvel’s Wolverine for PlayStation 5 will be a linear, globe-hopping single-player action game rather than an open-world title. The studio plans to release the game later this year.
The game is built around discrete missions that move the character across multiple global locations. Levels have a clear start and finish and focus on tightly scripted encounters and set pieces. Players can explore limited areas to find optional content and collectibles, but free-roam traversal is not the central design.
Daly described the team’s intention as avoiding an open-world or sandbox design in favor of a high-octane, linear single-player adventure. He compared the pacing to a comic-book rhythm, calling the experience a “rollercoaster” that “grips you from beginning to end.”
Combat is a central focus. Missions present combat gauntlets and offer multiple approaches to encounters. Daly noted stealth is an optional route: “Stealth is optional; you could do it or you could not do it, you could jump straight into combat.” Areas include different paths so players can choose how to engage challenges or inspect nooks to uncover extras.
Studio-released footage shows Wolverine fighting alongside Jean Grey and pursuing trucks on a motorcycle, reflecting a cinematic, action-driven tone. Insomniac developed the Spider-Man series for PlayStation using an open-world New York; Wolverine’s mission-based design contrasts with those titles and resembles earlier licensed console entries that favored linear levels and focused combat. The studio says it will use current production resources to deliver a single-player superhero game.
