IO Interactive Reboots Bond with 007: First Light
IO Interactive has rebooted James Bond with 007: First Light on PS5, a stealth sandbox starring a rookie 007 that emphasizes social-stealth, teamwork and limited-use gadgets
IO Interactive has introduced 007: First Light on PS5, a James Bond reboot that places players in the role of a newly minted 00 agent. The game presents an original narrative rather than adapting a film, beginning with tutorial missions and sending Bond and colleagues to investigate a suspected rogue 00 at a luxury hotel in Slovakia. Other missions take teams to a desert black market in Africa and a large London gala, with both confined and open environments.
Gameplay uses a social-stealth sandbox model. Players move through crowded areas, listen to NPC conversations to gather information, use distractions, climb and traverse architecture, and obtain badges or keycards to open new routes. Bond frequently operates alongside other agents and handlers. Missions offer multiple paths, including disguises and bluffing, though bluff attempts can fail against some enemies.
The game includes resource meters that limit special actions. An Instinct meter powers bluffing and distraction abilities and replenishes through takedowns and mission tasks. Gadgets rely on battery and chemical reserves. Bond’s Q-Watch can hack electronics, fire poison darts and cut padlocks with a laser, but each use can consume a large portion of its resources, often requiring players to search levels for batteries and chemicals before using a gadget again.
When stealth breaks down, combat replaces stealth mechanics. Melee uses a punch/grab/counter/dodge structure that rewards timed counters and environmental takedowns in one-on-one fights. Melee and gunplay become more difficult when Bond is swarmed in tight spaces or in prolonged firefights in wide-open areas. Ammo supply is limited and player survivability is low, which can make extended encounters difficult. NPCs sometimes react awkwardly or behave inconsistently in certain situations.
A review gave 007: First Light an 8 out of 10. The review described the game as delivering a character-focused story, stealth-driven moments and cinematic gadget set pieces, and identified resource management and larger combat encounters as areas of weakness.
IO Interactive applied elements of its sandbox design to the Bond license, emphasizing social-stealth mechanics, cooperative mission structure and constrained gadget use. The game’s systems require players to balance stealth, gadget use and limited resources across diverse mission settings.
