IO Interactive welcomes debate over younger James Bond
IO Interactive calls fan debate over Patrick Gibson’s younger James Bond ‘a little controversy’ and says strong reactions were expected after the reveal.
IO Interactive responded to mixed fan reactions after revealing 007 First Light’s portrayal of a younger James Bond, played by Patrick Gibson. The studio called the response ‘a little controversy’ and ‘a good thing.’
The development team, speaking from its Brighton studio, described their Bond as a different, younger iteration who has not yet developed the hardened worldview shown in the film versions. Developers defended the casting and creative choices that prompted fan discussion.
Tom Marcham, the game’s combat designer, said, ‘People having differing opinions about a James Bond: that’s great. If we made a Bond where no one had any opinions on them, it would be the dullest Bond ever made. So the fact that we’ve got a little controversy on that, I think it’s a good thing.’ He praised Patrick Gibson’s performance and added that the character grows on players during the experience.
Martin Emborg, narrative and cinematic director, described the game’s Bond as ‘a strong character’ and ‘another take’ on the classic figure, noting the character’s ‘unearned confidence.’ He added that the character has yet to see death the way an older Bond has and will come to terms with that.
The studio linked character design to combat systems. 007 First Light includes a License to Kill mechanic and ‘dynamic escalation’ encounters that change how players approach fights. Marcham explained that if enemies are unarmed, players can rely on close combat; when an opponent draws a gun, the encounter shifts to a lethal engagement.
Marcham noted the system allows gunfights to begin suddenly: ‘The moment they pull a gun: License to Kill.’ He said those escalation points change how an encounter plays and how players must plan and react.
007 First Light will launch on PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series on May 27. A Switch 2 release is planned for this summer. The studio confirmed in-game items, including a set of smart glasses.
The development team indicated it will continue refining the game ahead of the wider launch.
