Jak & Daxter movie reportedly still in development
Insider Daniel Richtman reports a live-action Jak & Daxter film is still in development; Sony has not named a studio, cast, director or release date.
Industry insider Daniel Richtman reported that a live-action adaptation of the PlayStation franchise Jak & Daxter remains in development. Sony and PlayStation Productions have not issued an official confirmation, and no producing studio, cast, director or release date has been disclosed.
Richtman’s update did not identify any companies or creative personnel attached to the project, and no production timeline was provided.
The adaptation first surfaced publicly nearly five years ago. In February 2022, director Ruben Fleischer, who led the 2022 Uncharted feature, said he was “working on Jak & Daxter, a version of that, for PlayStation.” The Uncharted film, which starred Tom Holland, grossed about $407 million worldwide on an estimated $120 million production budget.
Tom Holland later expressed interest in playing Jak and mentioned imagining a darker, offbeat take produced by an independent studio such as A24.
Jak & Daxter began as a platform series from developer Naughty Dog with the 2001 PlayStation 2 release Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. The original game follows Jak as he seeks to reverse a transformation affecting his friend Daxter. The series continued with Jak II (2003), Jak 3 (2004) and the spin-off Jak X: Combat Racing (2005). The most recent numbered entry, Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier, was released in 2009.
Sony currently offers a remastered bundle of the core Jak & Daxter games for PS4 and PS5 on the PlayStation Store. Apart from Fleischer’s 2022 comment and Holland’s remarks, no further casting, creative or production details have been released, and Richtman’s report is the latest public indication the project is still active.
