July PS Plus Essential adds Modern Warfare III, two indie titles

Sony announced the July PS Plus Essential free games will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, For the King II and CrossCode. All three are available on both PS5 and PS4 and will be free to claim for subscribers starting July 7 when the PlayStation Store refreshes in each region.

The PlayStation Store typically updates around noon local time, so Japan, other parts of Asia, Australia and New Zealand will see the new additions first. The company noted the Essential tier uses the same calendar date worldwide, with availability staggered by time zone.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is the latest entry in Activision’s long-running franchise and will be offered for both consoles.

Official descriptions present For the King II as: “Once beloved by her people, Queen Rosomon has turned against her subjects, casting them into servitude in the darkness of Fahrul’s mines whilst building alliances with sinister and malevolent forces. Gather your party in four player co-op or adventure alone through Fahrul as you risk everything to fight the tyrannical queen and bring an end to her oppressive reign.”

CrossCode is described as “a retro-inspired 2D action RPG” that “combines 16-bit style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.”

The company said the Essential lineup will go live on the same date across regions, unlike Extra and Premium tiers, though rollout will be staggered by local update times. Subscribers can claim the games through the PlayStation Store beginning at their local update time on July 7.
