LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight lands on PS5 May 22

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight for PS5 remixes Batman origin scenes into playful vignettes and adds Arkham-style combat, gadgets, local co-op and an open-world Gotham.

TT Games’ LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight reworks familiar Batman origin scenes into playful retellings and combines them with Arkham-style combat, a gadget toolkit, local two-player cooperative play and an open-world Gotham. The game will release on PlayStation 5 on May 22.

The preview session used a single-player build; local co-op is confirmed for the final release. Executive producer Matt Ellison described the story as “a remix of Batman’s Greatest Hits,” and said the team aimed to present a clear origin while offering new takes on familiar beats.

One early sequence alters the Flying Graysons routine: the performers survive a fall, later fire their son and prompt Bruce Wayne to hire him as Robin. The game includes references to TV, film, comics and earlier games, such as an Adam West-style red Bat-phone and costumes drawn from recent comics.

The game world is an open Gotham populated with pedestrians, vehicles, random crimes and an active train network. Players can travel by Batmobile on roads or use a grappling hook and glider for aerial movement. The preview offered four playable characters-Batman, Robin, Catwoman and Commissioner Gordon-out of a roster of seven, each with unique gadgets and abilities.

Combat uses mechanics familiar to Arkham-style action: chained attacks, timed counters, dodges and a Focus Meter for cinematic finishers. In the build shown, the Square button chains attacks, Triangle triggers counters, Circle dodges, and R1 performs a finisher when Focus is full. Armored and shielded enemies require timing and gadget use.

Gadgets are used for both combat and puzzles. The Batclaw returns alongside less conventional devices: Catwoman can summon a feline that attacks enemies and fits into small spaces, while Gordon uses a foam sprayer that jams gears and cameras or encases foes for environmental ejections. R2 activates many gadgets during exploration and set pieces.

Stealth segments appear in locations such as the Iceberg Lounge, where players can move across rafters or through a ballpit. Detection shifts play into combat rather than restarting the section. Random street crimes and scripted encounters populate the open world and provide frequent opportunities to use combat and gadget mechanics.

The game balances darker character designs with broad LEGO humor intended for all ages. Scenes shown included a training montage with LEGO visual gags, a rhythm minigame where Gordon breakdances to blend into a crowd, and lines that reference production lore and past performances.

Costume options let players equip characters with skins tied to different eras and settings, including locales such as Nanda Parbat and encounters like Poison Ivy’s garden. Ellison said the team wanted to celebrate Batman’s history across media while creating accessible entry points for new players.

The PS5 launch on May 22 will include local two-player co-op, story-driven missions, side crimes and puzzle-based exploration in an open-world Gotham.
