Fans criticize Level-5 anti-piracy plea over scarce Yo-kai Watch

Level-5 asked fans to stop pirating its games, drawing criticism as older Yo-kai Watch titles remain Japan-only and some 3DS cartridges are listed for up to $1,823.

Level-5 published an online statement asking its community to refrain from downloading or using pirated copies of its games. The message was posted recently and focused on discouraging piracy.

The appeal drew criticism from international fans who say they have limited legal options to play older Yo-kai Watch titles. Several early entries in the series were released only in Japan and have not been reissued abroad. Resale listings for physical Nintendo 3DS cartridges have reached as high as $1,823, and copies of Yo-kai Watch 3 are trading around $800 to $900, according to online resale listings.

Commenters pointed to limited international distribution as a reason for piracy complaints. One user wrote, “I don’t know what Level 5 is expecting? They gave up on the international market years ago, put out marginal worldwide releases, and then are surprised people pirate their older games? Lol. Most of the latter Yokai Watch games aren’t even available outside of Japan.” Another fan commented, “I get it as a company, but what are we fans supposed to do when the distribution of Yo-Kai Watch in many places, like the West, have been stopped, and it is physically unrealistic for us to support you as a company because you won’t distribute it to us for our language.”

Players outside Japan face practical hurdles. Many 3DS releases are available only in Japanese, physical cartridges are scarce, and importing titles can be costly or require technical workarounds. Some publishers make older games playable on modern platforms or reissue them for global markets; many Yo-kai Watch entries have not received those releases.

Level-5 is the developer and original publisher of the Yo-kai Watch series, which achieved strong sales in Japan and had limited international releases earlier in the franchise’s run. The company’s recent statement did not include specific plans to relaunch or localize older titles for overseas markets.
