Marathon free on PS5 June 2–9 as Season 2 launches
Marathon will be free on PS5 from June 2–9 as Season 2 launches; no PS Plus needed. The update resets gear progression and adds a new map, a new shell and seasonal challenges.
Bungie’s shooter Marathon will be free to play on PlayStation 5 from June 2 through June 9 to coincide with the start of Season 2. The free period does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription. Any progress earned during the week can be carried into the full game if players purchase it later.
Season 2 adds a new map, a new shell (a character class) and seasonal challenges. Bungie is resetting gear progression for all players at the start of the season. The reset applies to existing players as well as newcomers.
Bungie listed several other changes to progression and inventory systems, including “increased faction progression speed, a larger Vault, improvements to some of the more frustrating contracts, and more quality-of-life changes to help you on your climb.” A developer video accompanying the update suggests the character progression system has been substantially overhauled.
Bungie described the week as an “Open Play Week.” The free period is available only on Sony’s current-generation console, PlayStation 5. Marathon’s free week runs from June 2 through June 9, concurrent with the Season 2 launch and the rollout of these updates.
