Marathon Nightfall adds dark Dire Marsh, new Cradle progression

Bungie launched Marathon season Nightfall with a night Dire Marsh map, new lighting tools, a Sentinel Runner, two weapons, a shared Cradle skill tree, faster XP/credits and a streamlined Vault.

Bungie rolled out the Nightfall season for Marathon this week, introducing a night version of the Dire Marsh map, new lighting mechanics, a Sentinel Runner shell, two weapons and a reworked progression system called the Cradle. The update also reorganizes the Vault, clarifies item and mod information, and increases credit and XP rewards per session.

Nightfall replaces daytime visibility on Dire Marsh with true night conditions and adds tools for managing light. Players can equip flashlights, flares, darksight scopes and vector rounds or use illuminating grenades to expose or mark enemies. Certain high-risk areas on the map now include floodlights that create pockets of forced visibility, changing movement and engagement choices across the environment.

The season adds the Sentinel Runner shell and several defensive options. The shell includes a Defender System that can intercept incoming grenades and a Snare Mine that slows foes. A new Prey Tracker device functions as a small tracking unit for moving targets. Two new weapons arrive with the season: the KKV-9SD pistol-framed SMG and the D54 Battle Pistol. Early player notes highlight the SMG as a possible counter to the shotgun-heavy weapon mix from Marathon’s first season, while short sessions with the Battle Pistol produced positive impressions.

Nightfall introduces the Cradle, a unified stat progression shared across all Runners. The Cradle groups stat bonuses and perks into a single skill tree with six branches. Players can invest points in attributes such as Resistance to raise self-repair speed and Hardware resistance; higher tiers unlock perks such as reduced bleed-out time when downed. Credits earned through Faction quests remain the main currency for advancing the Cradle, and unwanted gear can be dismantled into XP for the tree. Players can reallocate Cradle points without penalty. With Faction upgrades refocused on Armoury unlocks, progression is consolidated in the Cradle.

Quality-of-life changes include the ability to access Faction quests and Codex entries from loading screens, a reorganized Vault to reduce management time, and clearer displays for mods and implants. Players and early reviewers reported faster progression under Nightfall’s economy; one reviewer reported reaching level six in about an hour and earning more than 7,000 credits in a single session, compared with slower gains at launch.

The update arrives while Bungie manages long-term franchise plans: Destiny 2 has announced an end to its run, and reports indicate Destiny 3 is not in active development. Marathon is available free to play this week, allowing lapsed and new players to try the season changes. Bungie will monitor player engagement and feedback as Nightfall is played over the coming weeks.
