Marvel Tokon headed to comics with one-shot and 20 variants

Marvel Tokon: First Strike #1, by Steve Orlando, Tom Waltz and Josh Trujillo, will expand the PS5 fighter’s story. Marvel will also run 20 promotional variant covers across its comics.

Sony’s PS5 fighting game Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will be supported by a one-shot comic, Marvel Tokon: First Strike #1, and a program of 20 promotional variant covers running across Marvel’s comic schedule.

The one-shot is written by Steve Orlando, Tom Waltz and Josh Trujillo, with art by Bruno Büll, Áthila Fabbio and Ryusei Yamada. The issue will expand the backstory of the game’s antagonist, The Promoter, a galaxy-hopping master of ceremonies who stages a deadly competition. The one-shot will be released with two cover options: art by Juan Frigeri and a second cover by Ryan Stegman or Michele Bandini.

Marvel confirmed 20 promotional variants tied to the game’s release campaign. Confirmed issues so far include Amazing Spider-Man #35, Avengers Armageddon #3, Captain America #14, Doomquest #4, Inglorious Force #8, Iron Man #8, Marc Spector: Moon Knight #7, Uncanny X-Men #33, Wolverine #26, X-Men #35 and X-Men #36. Marvel indicated additional variants will be revealed as the game’s roster is announced.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls features a story mode of about 10 hours presented like an interactive comic book with fighting sequences between chapters. The one-shot and the variant covers will provide extra context on squads, character relationships and motives beyond what players encounter in the game.

A separate Wolverine #25 variant will promote another upcoming PS5 superhero game and reference a 1991 comic. Exact release dates for Marvel Tokon: First Strike #1 and several variant issues have not been announced; Marvel indicated the variants will appear across its schedule over the coming months.
